Meanwhile, newcomer Anya, who was previously staying with Ruby and Caleb, was captured by evil Ray and Celia, bundled into a car and taken into a derelict building on the farm.

As Anya broke down in tears, it was revealed that Bear was also being held there – and it seemed that the pair already knew one another.

We already know that Ray and Celia are exploiting April and Dylan as the teens attempt to pay off a never-ending debt, with April having been dragged into the dark world of drugs.

But today’s episode begins to explain the true depth of Ray and Celia’s cruelty, as Emmerdale tackles the important topic of modern slavery.

Over three months ago, Bear was welcomed by Ray and given lodgings in exchange for hard labour, but he soon becomes trapped in his terrifying situation.

As Bear is manipulated by his captors, he sustains an injury which leaves him vulnerable, frail and unable to escape.

The episode also follows Anya and the heartwarming relationship she forms with Bear, but a series of events spells trouble for both victims, who are at the mercy of Ray.

Actor Joshua Richards, who plays Bear, said on this huge new story: “It may surprise many people, but slavery is alive and well, indeed prospering in the modern world.

“The disadvantaged, dispossessed, those with mental health issues or disabilities, the old, lonely and vulnerable people that our society neglect are the perfect prey for grooming by unscrupulous criminal agencies.”
