General Hospital Has Grossed-Out Fans Crying Foul Once Again!

General Hospital has certainly been on a roll this week! Their blizzard — timed awfully close to one massive winter storm in the real world that covered half the US — kicked off with Wyndemere-gate, which managed to both confuse and anger fans. Then as everyone hunkered down together in the storm, feelings took off, passions grew and quite a few folks ended up sharing a kiss. Folks like Danny and Charlotte!

And that got its own strong reaction! Because Danny and Charlotte are both Cassadine descendants! Charlotte’s grandfather is Victor Cassadine, while Danny’s greatgrandfather was his brother, Mikkos Cassadine. Alexis and Valentin are first cousins, so that would make Danny and Charlotte 2nd cousins, once removed.

Yes, we needed a chart to look it up, but yes, they are indeed related. And the fans very much noticed it once again! Over in the comments of the recap, folks like Da1989 didn’t hold back: “I knew they were going to go there with Danny and Charlotte, they’re supposed to be cousins! How gross!”

“I know it’s a soap and anything goes,” Krissy Fiederer bemoaned, “but what are these writers thinking these days? Not a fan of Lulu and Nathan, but I can deal with that over Danny and Charlotte! I don’t know how the writers think it’s okay. I know they’re not first cousins, but it’s still gross and wrong.”

And when we took the question over to Facebook… And the comments weren’t a whole lot better. A number of folks thought the writers may have forgotten they were related. Others, just hated the idea. “Gross” and “sick” were thrown around a decent amount. “The writers took a wrong turn with Charlotte and Danny,” Livie wrote. “What kind of backwoods writers does GH employ?”

Or, as Stacey Coleman put it: “Ugh and eww.”

But, gross as it is to think about, like it or not, we do have to point out that there are quite a few states that allow first cousins to marry, even more with first cousins once removed, and by the time we reach 2nd cousins once removed, it doesn’t seem to be an issue at all.

And there were, honestly, a surprising number of viewers who were fine with it on Facebook. “Just looked it up and they only share 1.5% of DNA,” Paula Brutton shared. (And yeah, that does seem to be the average.) “Hell, I probably share more than that with my neighbor down the street.”

“If you’re getting a headache trying to figure out the familial connection (like me),” Shawn Hundley added, “I would say does it really matter?” Plus, as Matilda Ladnier threw in, “Leave them alone. They’re teenagers. In five minutes it’s over.”

Now that’s a fair point! Either way, they are removed enough that we have a feeling there’s a good chance that if they do become more of a couple, General Hospital won’t back down from this pairing like they did with Cody and Sasha. (Something more than a few fans pointed out.) Or rather, Charlotte and Danny won’t have any more problems than any other drama-filled soap opera romance!
