Coronation Street’s Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) had a difficult question to ask partner Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) about his birthday during tonight’s episode.

Todd currently doesn’t have control of his finances, because Theo believes he’s not being responsible with money. In an attempt to control his partner even more, Theo gives Todd daily allowances, and refuses to entertain the idea of them having a joint bank account.

Because he didn’t have enough money in his pot to buy Theo a birthday present, Todd had to ask him for more cash in the latest instalment so he could get something. It was said with hesitancy, as Todd now constantly fears saying the wrong thing in case he falls victim to Theo’s violence afterwards.

Fortunately, Theo had a cool head and gave Todd £200, but explained that the money needed to cover a birthday present and a meal.

Todd headed off to work, but it was there his day went from bad to worse. After spilling food down his shirt, Todd dropped his phone and smashed the screen.

With his account also now in arrears, Todd wondered how on earth he would pay for his broken phone, pay his bill and organise Theo’s birthday all with £200.

In an attempt to get his hands on more cash, a desperate Todd was later seen with a receipt from a pawnbrokers after selling Billy Mayhew’s (Daniel Brocklebank) cufflinks.

Next week, Theo will decide to invite Gary Windass (Mikey North) and Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) for his birthday lunch.

With lunch over, Theo hands Todd the bill and insists they treat Gary and Maria. Todd sheepishly tells Nick that he’s only got £80. Throwing Todd a filthy look, Theo pays with his card leaving Todd humiliated.

Back at home, Theo turns nasty as he accuses Todd of ruining his birthday and snaps at him to fetch a bottle of wine.

When Todd suggests coffee instead, Theo loses it in a terrifying display of rage that leaves poor Todd cowering in terror. What is Theo going to do?
