SOAP SURPRISE Coronation Street hid Easter Egg in 65th anniversary episode as a nod to show’s original name – but did you spot it?

CORONATION Street bosses hid an Easter Egg in the special episode to mark the show’s 65th anniversary.

The ITV soap celebrates its anniversary today but Monday’s episode served as its on-screen marking with a touching nod to the show’s long history.

The episode itself centred on Weatherfield newcomer Maggie Driscoll’s 65th birthday party, a not-so subtle nod to the show’s birthday itself – however there was another much more lowkey element.

In the opening of the episode, newsagent Brian Packham was seen changing the posters outside the Kabin with a new one that showed how things could have been different.

Back in 1960 shortly before the show made its debut, creator Tony Warren had intended to call it Florizel Street.

The poster in the episode read: “Daily Discounts, Florizel Street”.

Bill Roache previously recalled why the name was changed.

He said: “It was called Florizel Street when we started rehearsing and everything.

“I remember coming in the room and saying Flor-aI-zel and a groan went up.

“Apparently a lot of people had been not liking it and one of the cleaners had said it sounded like a sanitary detergent.

“So the producer came in and said right, ‘I don’t care what name you’ve got, so long as it’s Coronation Street.’”

The episode also revealed that newcomer Maggie is a killer and had pushed her husband down the stairs to his death after he discovered she had had an affair.

The big twist revealed that Maggie’s son Ben may not be her late husband’s biological child.

Instead fans are convinced it links back to a scene where Maggie was seen looking shocked at something in Ken Barlow’s sideboard while searching for a punchbowl.

They reckon Maggie saw a picture of someone she knew – perhaps Peter Barlow – and that he is Ben’s biological father.

One wrote: “I reckon she had an affair with Peter Barlow as he worked in the navy and he’s 60 years old and she has just turned 65 and she saw something of Peter’s in Ken’s sideboard.”

Another added: “If they do and I really hope they don’t. I want Peter Barlow back ASAP!!”
